Hi everyone! In todays blog we will be writing about the 2 quarter final matches that were played on July 18th. The matches were Washington Spirit v Sky Blue FC and OL Reign v Chicago Red Stars.
Washington Spirit v Sky Blue FC
This game was a good match up. Both teams had some really close shots but the game ended in a 0-0 tie so they went to penalty kicks. For the first round Sarah Woldmoe went up for Sky Blue and put the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal. Then Rose Lavelle went up for Washington and using her left foot put the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal. It was Sky Blue-1, Washington-1. For the second round Naomi Kawasumi from Sky Blue shot the ball into the left corner of the goal. Then Ashley Hatch went up for Washington and put the ball in the bottom right corner of the goal. Since both teams scored it was Sky Blue-2, Washington-2. For the third round Dominique Richardson went up for Sky Blue, Aubrey Bledsoe dove to the right side and was able to keep the ball out of the net. Then Sam Staab went up for Washington but skied the ball without the keeper needing to do anything. Since neither team scored it was Sky Blue-2, Washington-2. McCall Zerboni went up next for Sky Blue and passed the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal. Then Washington Spirit's Crystal Thomas went up and shot the ball into the middle of the left side of the goal. It was now Sky Blue-3, Washington-3. Next Elizabeth Eddy went up for Sky Blue and rocketed the ball right into the bottom left corner of the goal. Then Bayley Feist went up for Washington and shot the ball just off center, mid level but Kailen Sheridan made the right guess blocking the shot, and was able to win the game for Sky Blue! The penalty kicks ended with Washington-3 and Sky Blue-4. Sky Blue is onto the semi-finals!
OL Reign v Chicago Red Stars
This game was an interesting one. Both teams created a lot of scoring opportunities but neither team was able to score in the ninety minute game. So, they went into penalty kicks. This was the third game (out of four) in the quarter finals of the 2020 Challenge Cup that went into penalty kicks. Penalties didn't start off well. Shirley Cruz from OL Reign and Julie Ertz from the Chicago Red Stars shot first for their teams. Shirley Cruz stepped up first and shot the ball with her right foot but it went over the goal. Julie Ertz stepped up next and shot the ball with the her right foot and rocketed it into the top right corner of the goal! OL Reign-0, Chicago Red Stars-1. Next up were Nicole Momiki for OL Reign and Vanessa DiBernardo for the Chicago Red Stars. Nicole Momiki stepped up first. She shot the ball with her left foot into the top of the goal! Next up was Vanessa DiBernardo. She shot the ball with her right foot into the top right corner! It was now OL Reign-1, Chicago-2. The next two players to come up were Darian Jenkins from OL Reign and Kealia Watt from The Chicago Red Stars. Darian Jenkins shot the ball with her right foot into the top left corner and Kealia Watt shot the ball with her right foot into the bottom left corner! It was now OL Reign -2, Chicago-3. Next up were Bethany Balcer for OL Reign and Rachel Hill for the Chicago Red Stars. Bethany Balcer used her right foot and shot it into the bottom left corner and Rachel Hill used her right foot and shot the ball into the top right corner! It was now OL Reign-3 Chicago Red Stars-4. Next Lauren Barnes from the OL Reign stepped up and took her shot. She shot with her left foot but hit the left post. Than means Chicago is moving onto the semi-finals!
