Hi Everyone! We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. In today's blog we will be writing about the NWSL Challenge cup matches that were played on July 5th. The games that were played were North Carolina Courage v Chicago Red Stars and Portland Thorns FC v Washington Spirit.
North Carolina Courage v Chicago Red Stars
Both teams took many shoots and had great opportunities. Then in the eighty-first minute, Abby Erceg for the Courage, headed the ball. It hit the post then bounced into the goal. The game finished with North Carolina taking the win 1-0.
Portland Thorns FC v Washington Spirit
The goalkeepers for both teams were definitely kept busy during this game. Throughout the first half there were a ton of shots but no one scored. Portland struck first in the sixty-ninth minute after Portland got a free kick. The ball soared into the 18-yard box were Lindsey Horan did a diving header, the ball hit off Aubrey Bledsoes hand but it wasn't strong enough so the ball went into the goal. The Thorns were up 1-0. In the seventy-seventh minute a Washington Spirit player took a corner kick that went to Ashley Sanchez. Sanchez back heeled the ball to Sam Staab who jumped in the air and headed the ball into the goal! Meghan Klingenberg tried to head the ball out of the net but she wasn't able to hit the ball with the right part of her head. The game ended in a 1-1 tie with each team getting one point.
