Looking Back: USWNT v Denmark, January 21, 2018

Hi everyone! We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy! This week's looking back is the USWNT game versus Denmark that took place on January 21, 2018.


Background Knowledge

This game took place at the SDCCU Stadium in San Diego, California. The USWNT starting lineup was Alyssa Naeher, Taylor Smith, Abby Dahlkemper, Tierna Davidson, Kelley O'Hara, Julie Ertz, Lindsey Horan, Andi Sullivan, Mallory Pugh, Alex Morgan(Captain), and Megan Rapinoe. The USWNT coach was the one and only Jill Ellis. This game took place exactly 502 days before the first 2019 Women's World Cup game. Before the game, Hope Solo

(who was no longer playing) was honored for getting 202 shutouts during her career on the USWNT. The USWNT played a 4-3-3. Last but not least, the last time the USWNT met up with Denmark (2014 Algarve Cup) the US lost 5-3.


1st Half

The US kicked off and the game had started. In the fourteenth minute, Nadim from Denmark was able to head the ball into the USWNT goal! Denmark was ahead! Then only four minutes later in the eighteenth minute, Mallory Pugh crossed the ball to Alex Morgan who was able to tap it into the goal! The US had tied the game! A few minutes later in the nineteenth minute, Tierna Davidson headed the ball to Julie Ertz who tapped it into the goal from in the air! Later in the twenty-fifth minute, Alex Morgan shot the ball but it hit the post. So close! The US had managed to take the lead in five minutes! Denmark was pressuring the ball a lot which forced the US to drop back. In the thirty-sixth minute, Mallory Pugh received the ball, took it down the field, and took the shot. It looked like it was going to go in but it went wide! After one minute of extra time, the ref blew the whistle and the first half had ended. The score at half was 2-1, US.



2nd Half

Denmark started with kick-off and the 2nd half was underway. Two minutes later in the forty-seventh minute, Mallory Pugh took over a bad pass by Denmark, dribbled towards goal, and shot the ball into the roof of the net! The US was up 3-1! Later in the fifty-fourth minute #10 Carli Lloyd came in for #7 Abby Dahlkemper and #16 Emily Sonnett came in for #22 Taylor Smith. About ten minutes later in the sixty-fifth minute, Mallory Pugh received a bad goal kick by Denmark's goalkeeper. She dribbled toward the goal and beat the keeper near post! That's 2 goals for Pugh! In the seventieth minute #23 Christen Press came in for #13 Alex Morgan, #19 Crystal Dunn came in for #15 Megan Rapinoe, #12 Lynn Williams came in for #11 Mallory Pugh, and last but not least #26 Savannah McCaskill made her first senior national team appearance when she came in for #6 Andi Sullivan. Later in the eighty-first minute, Christen Press received the ball inside the 18-yard box and took a volley, Denmarks goalkeeper was able to deflect it but Crystal Dunn beat her defender and was able to tap the ball into the goal! The US was up 5-1!! After 2 minutes of extra time, the game was over and the US had won 5-1.
