While no live games are being played, US Soccer has been replaying iconic games throughout the week so everyone can still watch soccer. This week they showed the USWNT game against South Korea on June 20, 2013.
Background knowledge:
The USWNT starting line up was Hope Solo, Meghan Klingenberg, Whitney Engen, Christie Rampone (now Christie Pearce), Crystal Dunn, Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd, Heather O'Reilly, Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach, and Lauren Cheney. They were playing in Red Bull Arena in Harrison New Jersey. Their head coach was Tom Sermanni and their captain was Christie Rampone. An interesting fact is that coming into this game, Abby Wambach was two goals away from tying Mia Hamm's scoring record. That meant that she had to get a hat trick to beat it.
First Half
The game started off with the USWNT kicking off. Fifteen seconds into the game Megan Rapinoe received a through ball and attempted to cross it into the box but it hit the outside of the goal. A few minutes later in the fifth minute, Alex Morgan received the ball and played into the box where Carli Lloyd was who volleyed the ball but it went out. Only a few seconds later in the fifth minute Alex Morgan was able to take the ball from a Korean player just outside the eighteen-yard box and tried to dribble around the defender towards the goal but the Koran player was able to deflect it out. About forty seconds later in the sixth minute Alex Morgan dove and saved the ball from going out of bounds and the ball deflected towards the middle of the six-yard box but the Korean goalkeeper was able to come off her line and get the ball. In the seventh minute, Megan Rapinoe served the ball into the eighteen-yard box where Abby Wambach met it and headed it towards the goal but the Korean goalkeeper was able to save it. Then in the eighth minute, Alex Morgan ran down the field crossed the ball into the box. The ball was tapped out of the eighteen-yard box by a Korean defender. Carli Lloyd met the ball at the outside of the box but unfortunately shot the ball wide.
Then in the tenth minute, the US got their chance. Lauren Cheney passed the ball into the box where Abby Wambach received the ball, took a two-touch turn and shot the ball into the lower left side of the goal! The US was leading one nothing and Abby Wambach only needed one more goal to tie Mia Hamm! Then only two minutes later in the twelfth minute, Abby Wambach had a breakaway. She shot the ball but the Korean goalkeeper was able to make a kick save and keep the score 1-0. Then in the nineteenth minute Lauren Cheney served the ball into the box where Abby Wambach dove and headed the ball into the back of the net! She was now tied with Mia Hamm for most goals scored! Her teammates ran onto the field as the stadium erupted! But Abby wasn't done scoring yet! In the twenty-ninth minute, the US had a corner kick. Megan Rapinoe served the ball into the eighteen-yard box. This was it! Abby Wambach headed the ball into the back of the net! She had now beaten Mia Hamm's record! She had just made soccer history! But Abby STILL wasn't done, in the forty-sixth minute (first half overtime) Alex Morgan crossed the ball into the eighteen-yard box where Abby Wambach slid and tapped the ball into the net! That's four goals! The final half time score ended up being US 4, South Korea 0.
Second Half
Before South Korea started the second half with kick-off, Jill Loyden subbed in for Hope Solo. South Korea started with kick-off and the second half was underway. Three minutes later in the forty-eighth minute, the US subbed Becky Sauerbrunn, #4 in for #3, Christie Rampone (Now known as Christie Pearce). A minute later the US subbed in Sydney Leroux #2 (Now known as Sydney Leroux Dwyer) for #13 Alex Morgan. The US was having lots of shots but was not able to put the ball in the back of the net. Later in the fifty-eighth minute, the US made another sub, #23 Christen Press came in for #20 Abby Wambach. In the sixty-fourth minute, Kelly O'Hara crossed the ball into the eighteen-yard box where Lauren Cheney's head met with the ball and put the ball in the back of the net! The Six minutes later the US made a sub and put Yael Averbuch #16, in for Lauren Cheney #12. For the rest of the game, the US was taking a lot of shots but they were unable to put any in the back of the net. After three minutes of overtime, the game ended in a 5-0 win for the US.
Not only was it a good win for the US but it was a big night for Abby Wambach. She broke the scoring record that Mia Hamm had set at 158. As of today the only person who has passed Abby's record is Christine Sinclair on the Canadian National team.
