Hi everyone and welcome back to Women on the Pitch! We hope everyone has been doing well and staying healthy. The official 2022 NWSL season is underway so here is a recap of some of the first games of the season played!
Washington Spirit vs OL Reign
May 1st, 2022
Ashley Sanchez got this game going for the Spirit. In the 14th minute, after getting the ball just outside the 18-yard box, Sanchez struck the ball into the upper 90 of the net! The Spirit had gotten the early lead. OL was the next to put one on the board. In the 53rd minute, after a cross into the 6-yard box, Aubrey Kingsbury wasn’t able to hold on to the ball and Rose Lavelle was there to tap it in! The game was all tied up. Only 13 minutes later, did Washington get their lead back. In the 66th minute, after getting a cross into the box, Ashley Hatch was able to get up and head the ball, slightly redirecting it, putting it across the goal and into the back of the net! Washington was able to hold on to their lead and get a 2-1 win!
Houston Dash vs San Diego Wave FC
May 1st, 2022
This game almost went scoreless, but Jodie Taylor didn’t let that happen. It wasn’t until the 86th minute that the first and only goal was scored. After a ball got crossed into the 18-yard box and headed into the 6-yard box, Jodie Taylor from San Diego was able to break away from her defender and tap the ball just past the keeper and into the back of the net! San Diego was able to hold on to their lead and take home the 1-0 victory!
Orlando Pride vs NJ/NY Gotham FC
May 1st, 2022
Gotham sealed the deal on their victory for this game in the first half. Their first goal came in the 29th minute; After Gotham got a corner, McCall Zerboni was able to get her head to the ball and get it past Orlando Pride's goalkeeper, And it only took one minute for them to score again! After getting a long ball over the top, Midge Purce ran on to it, dribbled into the 18-yard line, took it almost completely to the end line, then managed to chip the ball into the right side of the goal! Gotham had scored 2 goals in 2 minutes! Their next one came only 11 minutes later in the 41st minute of the game. Kristie Mewis received a cross inside the 18-yard box, dribbled in a little bit more, beat 2 defenders then struck the ball with her right foot across her body, putting the ball just inside the far-post! Gotham was able to hold on to their 3-0 lead for the rest of the game and took home a 3-0 win!
