Hi everyone! We hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy. The NWSL Challenge cup happened this past weekend and it was a nail bitter! Lets get to it!
The Portland Thorns hosted NJ/NY Gotham FC for the Challenge cup final. Portland did not take long to get started. In the 8th minute after a bad give away from Carli Lloyd Christine Sinclair got the ball, dribbled to the top of the 18 yard box and shoot the ball into the bottom left corner of the net! Portland was up and they were only 8 minutes into the game! Shots were taken but not able to be finished before half. Gotham wasn't giving up yet. In the 61st minute after getting the cross in Carli Lloyd got up and was able to head the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal! The game was all tied up, 1-1! Portland was firing shots off non-stop but unable to put any in the back of the net. After the 3 mins of over time, with no team scoring they went into penalty kicks! Allie Long went up first for Gotham and put the ball into the bottom left corner of the net. Next up was Christine Sinclair, putting the ball into the right corner of the net and making the penalty kicks 1-1. Lloyd stepped up for Gotham and made the penalties 2-1. Next for Portland was Megan Klingenburg who hit the the cross bar! Then the same thing happened for Gotham, they hit off the cross bar! Lindsey Horan stepped up to take hers and tied the pks 2-2. Both teams scored their 4th and 5th penalties sending the pks into sudden death. Both teams scored their first pks of sudden death. Becky Sauerbrunn almost missed but managed to get it under Gothams goalkeepers hand. Adrianna Franch was able to save Gothams 6th pk giving Portland the prime opportunity to take the win. Morgan Weaver stepped up, shot the ball, and won Portand the Challange Cup! After putting the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal, Portland took the win! It was down to the very end and Gotham fought hard but Portland were the Champs.
