NWSL May 7th- 8th Regular Season Games

First off, we would like to wish a Happy Mothers day to everyone, especially to all the badass female athletes who are also great moms! A lot of moms really showed off their soccer skills including Alex Morgan, Sydney Leroux, and Jessica McDonald. Here are some recaps of all the NWSL games on May 7th and 8th.

San Diego Wave vs Gotham FC

May 7th, 2022

It’s safe to say that Alex Morgan was on FIRE during this game. She scored all four goals for the Wave leading them to a 4-0 victory over NJ/NY Gotham FC. Here’s a recap of all of her goals. The first half almost ended scoreless, but after a PK for San Diego in the 45+1 minute of the game, that all changed. Morgan stepped up to the PK mark, putting it right down the middle with power. With Gotham's goalkeeper already diving, the ball was able to go right in. San Diego had gotten the lead going into the half. Morgan's next goal was in the 66th minute. After a San Diego player was fouled in the box, Morgan took her second PK of the night. This time she struck the ball into the right side of the goal. Gotham's keeper dove to the right side, but not fast enough to stop the ball. Morgan had gotten San Diego a second goal! And it only took her 4 minutes to get them another. In the 70th minute, even after the cross got picked off by a Gotham defender in the box, Morgan was able to win the ball back, take a touch, and shoot the ball with her left foot. The ball soared across the goal into the net! Morgan had gotten a hat trick and given San Diego a 3 goal lead. Morgan wanted one more to finish off the game; In the 90+1 minute of the game, after a bad pass back from Gotham, Morgan picked off the pass, dribbled to the top of the 6-yard box, and shot the ball past the goalkeeper near post and into the goal! Morgan secured San Diego's 4-0 win!

Kansas City Current vs Houston Dash

May 8th, 2022

This game didn’t get going till the end of the first half. In the 40th minute of the game, after Houston got a PK, Rachel Daly stepped up to take it. Daly shot the ball across her body to the right side of the goal, and with Kansas City's goalkeeper diving in the opposite direction, Daly had gotten Houston the lead going into halftime. The game was looking like it was going to end in a 1-0 win for Houston, but Houston wanted one more. In the 90+6 minute of the game, after running onto a bouncing ball, Briana Vsalli was able to dribble into the 18-yard box, get past Kansas City's goalkeeper, and solidify Houston's 2-0 victory! I would like to say that both goalkeepers made some amazing saves and without them in goal, the score would have looked much different.

Angel City FC vs Orlando Pride

Sydney Leroux got the game going fast for Orlando, and her goal ended up being the game winner. Leroux got the cross into the 6-yard box, and even with an Angel City player getting a foot to it, it wasn’t enough to keep the ball out of the net. I’m sure Leroux’s kids were very proud of her on mothers day!

OL Reign vs Racing Louisville FC

May 8th, 2022

This game had a lot of goals, and Tziarra King from OL Reign scored half of them, in 4 minutes!! Racing Louisville was the first to score. In the 23rd minute, Jessica McDonald got the ball just inside the 18-yard box and was able to get under the ball just enough to get it into the side of the net! OLs goalkeeper had a good dive, but it wasn’t enough to get to it. OL Reign managed to score 2 goals before the end of the half, putting OL ahead. As I said before, Tziarra King had a lot to do with it. In the 33rd minute, Tziarra King received a through ball played into the 18-yard box, took her touch forward, and then just poked it past Louisville's goalkeeper. Only 4 minutes later did she score again. In the 37th minute, a shot was taken and Louisville's goalkeeper made the original save, but King was there to follow it up and put it in the back of the net! OL had taken the lead away from Louisville. Unfortunately for OL, they wouldn’t be able to take home the full 3 points. In the 60th minute, Louisville got a free kick and in an effort to clear the shot, Bethany Balcer tried to kick it out but it hit off the crossbar and over the goal line. The game ended in a 2-2 tie with both teams getting a point.
