Hi everyone! Sorry for the post-drought everybody, it's a crazy time of year! We hope everyone is staying safe are excited to be back! In this blog, we will be talking about the upcoming USWNT Games and the beginning games of the NWSL Season! Let's get started!
USWNT Upcoming Games
The USWNT team has two games coming up against Uzbekistan. The first game will take place on April 9th at 5:30 PM EDT in Columbus, Ohio. The second game will take place on April 12th at 7 PM EDT in Chester, Pennsylvania. Best of luck to both teams!
Let's get to the first few games of the NWSL Season!
Racing Louisville FC vs Kansas City Current - 3/18/22
This was a pretty eventful game. This first major opportunity came in the 20th minute when Jessica McDonald played a beautiful ball to Cece Kizer who was able to pass the ball into the goal with her left foot. What a beautiful goal! Then in the 30th minute, Kansas City hit the crossbar, almost evening the score! There wasn't much more action until the 78th minute when Addie McCain was able to pass the ball into the right side of the net with her right foot, evening the score! A few minutes later in the 82nd-minute Racing Louisville saved the ball on the line, just before it went over, what a save! There wasn't any more action for the rest of the game, which meant the final score was 1-1.
OL Reign vs Portland Thorns FC - 3/18/22
There were a lot of opportunities for both teams in the first ten minutes but the first goal came in the 19th minute. Sofia Huerta was able to smash the ball into the left side of the goal, giving OL Reign the 1-0 lead. About ten minutes later in the 28th minute, Christine Sinclair was able to capitalize on a deflection and tie up the game! There were a few more chances for goals but neither team was able to score again, resulting in the final game score being 1-1.
Orlando Pride vs Washington Spirit- 3/19/22
There were lots of shots taken, and a lot of good saves, but the first game of the season for both the Orlando Pride and Washington Spirit ended in a 0-0 draw.
North Carolina Courage vs NJ/NY Gotham FC - 3/19/22
This one was certainly back and forth! North Carolina ultimately came out on top. Brianna Pinto was the first to strike for North Carolina. In the 22nd minute, after a beautiful cross-in from Carson Pickett, Brianna Pinto was able to get her head on it and put the ball past NJ/NY goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris to put the Courage up! The score was 1-0 still at halftime, but it didn’t take long for North Carolina to strike again. In the 51st minute after a corner crossed in, and the ball getting bobbled around in the box, Abby Erceg was able to half volley the ball into the lower-left corner of the goal! The game ended with the North Carolina Courage taking the 2-0 win!
Angel City FC vs San Diego FC - 3/19/22
This was such a historic game! Being new teams added to the NWSL franchise they both played their first official games against each other! There were some great shots and saves in the first half but the action didn’t kick into gear until the second half of the game. Angel City was the first to strike! After a great cross-in, Savannah McCaskill was able to get up for the header and put the ball into the bottom right corner of the net! Angel City was on the board first! It was looking like the game was going to end in a win for Angel City but San Diego wasn’t going to let that happen. In the 81st minute, after the ball bounced around from a corner kick, Kaleigh Riehl was able to get on the end of it and put it in the back of the net! The historic game ended in a 1-1 tie!
Houston Dash vs Chicago Red Stars - 3/20/22
Man was this a jammed pack game! After a foul by Chicago, in the 19th minute, Houston Dash got their prime opportunity to get ahead. After a cross from Rachel Daly went through the box, then hitting off the post, Katie Naughton was there to put it in the net! Houston had taken the lead! It didn’t take long for Chicago to strike back though. After a great passing sequence and then playing the ball through in the 27th minute, Mallory Pugh ran on to it and took a shot, although her first shot was saved by Jane Campbell, Houston Dash’s goalkeeper, she was able to get to the ball again and get Chicago on the board! The game was all tied up! Both teams went into halftime, but the game definitely was not over. In the 58th minute, after a foul in the box Houston, Arin Wright stepped up to take the PK for Chicago. She ran up… and rocketed it into the left side of the net! Even though Chicago was up 2-1, they still weren’t done! 2 minutes later in the 60th minute, after a bad give away by Houston, Mallory Pugh took the ball, dribbled to the top of the 18-yard box, and fired the ball into the right upper 90 of the net! Chicago was able to hold on to the lead and take the 3-1 win!
