In this blog, we are writing about the US Women's National team and their game versus Costa Rica! Before we start we just want to congratulate the US Women's National Team for finishing group A in 1st place!
Now let's get started! The US team started with a 4-3-3 formation. This was there starting line up: Alyssa Naeher (1), Emily Sonnett (2), Ali Krieger (11), Abby Dahlkemper (7), Crystal Dunn (19), Julie Ertz (8), Samantha Mewis (3), Lindsey Horan (9), Jessica McDonald (14), Carli Lloyd (Captain) (#10), Christen Press (20). Costa Rica's starting formation was a 4-4-2.
The US started the game with kickoff. In the fourth minute, Christen Press got the ball faked out a defender, cut back to her left foot and rocketed the ball into the upper left corner of the goal! What a way to start a game! Then just six minutes later in the tenth minute Carli Lloyd played the ball through to Lindsey Horan and passed the ball into the bottom right corner! That's two goals in ten minutes! 4 minutes later in the 14th minute, Jessica McDonald nearly missed a diving header. Not too much happened until the twenty-ninth minute when Sam Mewis's shot was saved by Costa Rica's goalkeeper. The USWNT was not giving up though, in the 36th minute Christen Press blasted the ball into the upper right 90. Ooof was that a goal! The whistle blew for half time and the score 3-0, US.
Costa Rica had kick-off and the 2nd half was on its way. In the 55th minute, Kelly O'Hara came in and Crystal Dunn was subbed out. 8 minutes later in the 63rd minute, after a beautiful free-kick from Christen Press, Sam Mewis tapped the ball into the net first time. A minute later in the 64th minute Tobin Heath came in for Julie Ertz and Megan Rapinoe came in for Carli Lloyd. 15 minutes later in the 70th minute, Christen Press headed the ball just over the goal. Just 7 minutes later in the 77th minute, Sam Mewis made a cross and all Jessica McDonald had to do was pass it in! That's 5-0! Then 5 minutes later in the 82nd minutes Sam Mewis headed the ball over the line, it did bounce back but the ref said it was over so the score was 6-0! The whistle blew and the final score was 6-0. They truly killed it!
