USWNT v Mexico

Updated: Feb 11, 2020

Hi everyone! In this blog, we will be writing about the USWNT game against Mexico for the chance to play Canada for a spot in the Olympics. Before we start we would like to congratulate Crystal Dunn on playing in her 100th USWNT game! Her first appearance for the USWNT was in 2013 when the US played a friendly versus Scotland on February 9th. Her 100th cap was against Mexico on February 7th, 2020. We would also like to congratulate Canada for making it to the finals of CONCACAF qualifying!

Now here is some background knowledge: The USWNT started in a 4-3-3 formation. Here was their was starting line up: Alyssa Naeher (1), Crystal Dunn (19), Becky Sauerbrunn (4), Abby Dahlkemper (7), Kelley O'Hara (5), Samantha Mewis (3), Julie Ertz (8), Rose Lavelle (16), Megan Rapinoe (15), Carli Lloyd (10), Tobin Heath (17). Mexico played in a 4-1-4-1. Also, when we were looking at the list of subs and we noticed that they spelled Ali Krieger, Aly Krieger! The game took place in Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson California.

The US Women's National Team started with kickoff. Then in the third minute, Megan Rapinoe scored, but the goal was called off because Megan Rapinoe was offsides. Then in the fifth minute, Rose Lavelle scored using her left foot after she received a pass from Megan Rapinoe, Rose Lavelle shot the ball just outside the 18 yard-box! The ball rocketed into the lower-left corner! Wow! That was a great way to start the game! Then in the fourteenth minute Megan Rapinoe took a corner kick that stayed on the ground, Julie Ertz made a run near post to open up space, which made it so all Samantha Mewis had to do was to tap it in. She rocketed the ball above the Mexican goalie head and into the goal! Then six minutes later in the twentieth minute, Tobin Heath was called offsides. Just five minutes later in the twentieth fifth minute, Rose Lavelle shot the ball wide after receiving it from a cross made by Kelley O'Hara. Then in the thirty-third minute, Carli Lloyd went in for a ball and got called for a handball. Then seven minutes later in the fortieth minute, Mexico's goalie caught the ball after Kelley O'Hara shot it. Just four minutes later in the forty-fourth minute, Carli Lloyd headed the ball wide off the goal. The final half time score ended up being 2-0 with the US winning.

The second half started with Mexico kicking off. Just three minutes later in the 48th minute, Megan Rapinoe had a free-kick after Tobin Heath was taken down just outside the box. Megan Rapinoe chipped the ball into the air and was received by Crystal Dunn but she shot the ball just wide. Two minutes later in the fiftieth minute, Carli Lloyds skyed the over the goal after receiving a cross from Tobin Heath. Then two minutes Alyssa Nacher ran across her goal and scooped up the ball. Then in the sixty-seventh minute, Sam Mewis took an amazing free-kick that blasted its way right into the bottom left corner! In the 68th minute Christen Press came in for Tobin Heath and Lynn Williams came in for Megan Rapinoe. 4 minutes later in the seventy-first minute, Christen Press took a shot that was stopped by a defender but the ball came right back to Press who was able to take the first time shot with her left foot and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper. Later in the 76th minute, Linsey Horan came in for Rose Lavelle. There were two minutes of stoppage time and the game ended with a score of 4-0, US. With the 4 games before the finals, the US scored a total of 22 goals.
