USWNT v Panama

Updated: Feb 11, 2020

Hi everyone! Today we will be writing about the US Women's team versus Panama game for there chance to qualify for the 2020 Olympics. We have to say, this was a very eventful game. Let's jump into a break down of the game.

Before we actually talk about the game here is some background knowledge. The USWNT started in a 4-3-3. Ashlyn Harris (18) started in goal, Emily Sonnett (2), Ali Krieger (11), Becky Sauerbrunn (4), and Crystal Dunn (19) all were our starting defenders. Then in the midfield, there was Andi Sullivan (6), Rose Lavelle (16), and Lindsey Horan (9). Last but not least the USWNT starting forwards were Jessica McDonald (14), Lynn Williams (13), and Meagan Rapinoe (#15 and captain). Their positions were listed right to left. In case you didn't notice Rose Lavelle was playing with a soft cast on her left as a precautionary measure after a slight collision in the USWNT game versus Haiti.

Panama had the first touch on the ball at the blow of the whistle. The US struck first and fast, in the 3rd minute Linsey Horan put the ball in the back of the net. 12 minutes later Linsey Horan played a threw ball to Lynn Williams who dribbled around the keeper and scored with her right foot. Just 2 minutes later in the 17th minute, Jessica McDonalds crossed the ball into the 18-yard box where Emily Sonnett kept her defender away from the ball and went right to Linsey Horan who just had to touch it in! In the 21st minute, Rose Lavelle scored a beautiful goal off an assist by Lynn Williams. Just a few minutes later in the 25th minute Crystal Dunn missed a shot. Only 4 minutes later in the 29th minute, Lynn Williams scored but then the goal was called offsides. Then a minute later in the 30th Lynn Williams missed a shot. Unfortunately in the 31st minute, Panamas goalie had to be carried off the field in on the stretcher. Four minutes later in the 35th minute, Rose Lavelle scored but it was called offsides. The final half time ended up being 4-0 with the US winning.

With the blow of a whistle, the 2nd half was on its way. Not much was happening but the US was taking tons of shots. In the 61st minute, Megan Rapione was subbed out and Christen Press went in, for the rest of the game Becky Saurbrunn wore the captain's armband. In the 62 minute Crystal Dunn was subbed off and Abby Dahlkemper went in. Not much happened until the 70th minute when the ball met Christen Press's head and soared into the bottom left corner of the goal. Only 2 minutes later in the 72nd Jessica McDonald rocketed the ball into the left upper 90 with an amazing volley. Then 6 minutes later in the 78th minute, Tobin Heath scored after Lindsey Horan set her up for the shot! After only 3 minutes, in the 81st minute Lindsey Horan scored her hattrick goal! Just 4 minutes later Christen Press just barely missed a backheel pass into the goal. The final score of the game was 8-0! I hope you enjoyed our blog and make sure to read our other ones! Enjoy the rest of your week!
